1900 Olympic Games in Paris, was India’s first representation in Olympics. The only Indian Athlete Sprinter Norman Pritchard won Silver medal in the men’s 200m and 200m hurdles.

With Eight Olympic Gold Medals Indian athletes are best known for their performance in Hockey Games. Indian team won Six consecutive Gold Medals in Hockey between 1928 to 1956. The last medal Indian won in hockey was a gold medal in 1980 Moscow Olympic games. Since then team is struggling to show the magic compared to earlier days.
The Indian women’s hockey team has only competed at the Olympic Games on two occasions. Occupied fourth on its debut in 1980 Moscow, and finished at bottom of Group in Rio 2016.
The only gold India has won other than hockey was in the men’s 10m air rifle at the 2008 Games in Beijing, where Shooter Abhinav Bindra have won Olympic gold. Tennis player Leander Paes holds the record for the maximum number of Olympic appearance for India, who participated in seven consecutive editions of the Games between 1992 and 2016. Paes’ best result was a bronze medal in men’s singles at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

India won two medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In the women’s 58kg category, Freestyle wrestler Sakshi Malik claimed bronze , it was the fifth time an Indian competitor had finished on the podium in wrestling. Badminton player PV Sindhu won silver in the women’s singles, following in the footsteps of Saina Nehwal who won India’s first Olympic medal in badminton – a bronze in women’s singles – at London 2012.
